Before Austrian painter Gustav Klimt established his own decorative style, he produced more conventional portraits. In 1892 the artist's brother Ernst Klimt passed away and Klimt took guardianship of his daughter Helene. Klimt produced this portrait of Helene depicting her from a side angle which enhances her clear-cut bob, which is complimented by an impressionist rendering of her white blouse.
